Girolamo, or Gerolamo, Sauli (d. 1559) was a Roman Catholic prelate who served as Archbishop of Bari (1540-1550) and Archbishop of Genoa (1550-1559). Giulio Canano was secretary to Pope Julius III. Giovanni Battista and Ludovico Genitori are unknown; the former may be Giovanni Battista Canani (1515-1579), noted anatomist and chief physician to Pope Julius III.
Bologna was an important trading and cultural center in Italy for centuries; its university is generally considered the oldest university in continuous operation. Following a period of civil discord in the 14th century, Bologna was either directly or indirectly under the control of the Pope for more than four hundred years (circa 1330-1796).
The Citizenship grant, Bologna is a single document consisting of a large sheet of vellum, written in Latin in black and blue ink ornamented with gold leaf, and with a red wax seal affixed. The document makes "Lord Giulio [Canano], Lord Ludovico [Genitori] and Lord Giovanni Battista named above and your legitimate and natural sons and their descendants forever...citizens of the city of Bologna."
