Salomon de Jongh or de Yongh (1858-1942) and his wife Rosatje Schwarz de Jongh were Dutch Jews who resided in Amsterdam, Holland. Their daughter Henriette Emma de Jongh married Isedore van Zwanenberg in Den Haag, Holland on March 6, 1923; the couple lived in various locations in Europe for a time and eventually emigrated to the United States, settling in Cuba, New York. De Jongh kept up a lively correspondence with Henriette and her husband and children. Later letters indicate that he lived in a Jewish retirement home in Amsterdam during this period. A handwritten note included in the collection, written in Dutch, states that early in the morning of Monday, Nov 23, 1942, four policeman came in a car and took Salomon de Jongh to the Hollandsche Schouwburg (the Dutch Theatre, used by the Germans as a holding area for Jews being deported to concentration camps), and that he died a few days later.
The Salomon de Jongh - Henriette van Zwanenberg Correspondence consists of letters from Salomon de Jongh to his daughter Henriette Emma van Zwanenberg; there are also a few letters from other family members, including at least one from Henriette's son Nico. Topics of the letters include family events, family history and day-to-day life in Amsterdam during the period 1940-1942. The vast majority of the letters are in Dutch, with a few (usually those from Henriette) in French.
The letters are all photocopies, apart from the brief handwritten note giving information about de Jongh's death which is an original.
