Anthony Walton White Evans (1817-1886) was an American civil engineer. A graduate of Rensselaer Polytechnicm he served as assistant engineer on the Erie Canal, assistant on the construction of a branch of the New York and Harlem Railroad, and chief engineer for construction of railroads in Chile and Peru. Upon returning to the United States in 1860 he became a successful consulting engineer and later president of the United States Petroleum Company and the Spuyten Duyvil Rolling Mill.
The Montezuma swamp later became the Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge, a major resting area for waterfowl and other waterbirds on their journeys to and from nesting areas in northeastern and east-central Canada.
The Anthony Walton White Evans Correspondence consists of a letter from civil engineer Anthony Walton White Evans to William Paterson, describing his work surveying the Montezuma and Cayuga swamps in central New York. The letter reads, in part:
I believe I told you in my last that the state had ordered our party to make a survey of the Montezuma and Cauga [Cayuga] marshes. Now this same survey is by far the worst and most laborious job that the states have in their gift.
