Charles Howard, 1st Earl of Nottingham (1536-1624) was an English admiral. He succeeded his father as 2nd Baron Howard of Effingham in 1572, and was later created Earl of Nottingham in 1597. He was a cousin of Elizabeth I and was appointed to a number of state positions by her, including Lord High Admiral of the English fleet. He is best known for being in command of the fleet in 1587 during the unsuccessful invasion of the Spanish Armada.
The Charles Howard, 1st Earl of Nottingham Letters consist of two handwritten, signed letters by Howard. The first item is dated 11 Dec 1591 and addressed to the Lord High Chancellor of England. It is a letter of recommendation for a "captain Warner" and Howard makes reference to the invasion of the Spanish Armada.
The second letter is dated 1 Oct 1609. In the letter, Howard requests payment for George Hopton, who was working as a Gardner at Hampton Court.
