David L. Hughes (1873-1935) was one of two "Rough Riders" from Tucson, Arizona. The "Rough Riders," officially the 1st U.S. Volunteer Cavalry, was a military unit that served in the Spanish American War. Originally commanded by Col. Leonard Wood, they are more popularly known as having been led by Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt, later the 26th President of the United States. Hughes was wounded in the battle of San Juan Hill and later received the distinguished service medal for his actions.Information adapted from the David L. Hughes Papers at the Arizona Historical Society.]
Hermann Hagedorn (1882-1964) was an American author and biographer; in particular, he was the friend and biographer of Teddy Roosevelt. Edith Kitt is probably Edith Stratton Kitt (1878-1968), early advocate and supporter of the Arizona Historical Society and member of the Arizona Women's Hall of Fame.
The David L. Hughes Collection Relating to Theodore Roosevelt consists of incoming correspondence relating to the history of Teddy Roosevelt's "Rough Riders."
