William Henry Seward, Sr. (1801-1872) was the 12th Governor of New York, a United States Senator, and Secretary of State under Presidents Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson. He is best remembered for engineering the purchase of Alaska from Russia ("Seward's Folly") and for his active opposition to slavery.
The William H. Seward Letters consists of incoming and outgoing letters. One of the incoming letters is a letter from Matthew Livingston Davis, congratulating Seward on "the results of the late Election in our State" (i.e., Seward's election as governor of New York). A pair of letters relates to A.D. Hale's review of Seward's book (the title is not specified). A fourth letter concerns a legal case in Auburn, New York and fifth, from Seward, discusses a report to the Senate.
