Biographical History

Martin Engelbrecht (1684-1756) was an Augsburg engraver and art publisher. In addition to prints, he also produced sets of layered cutout images which, when arranged one behind the other and viewed at eye level, create a three-dimensional perspective of a scene. The method is similar to a "tunnel book" but the leaves are not bound together. Surviving examples include a Turkish mosque, a Chinese drawing room, and a theater performance.

Scope and Contents of the Collection

Note: Individual "scenes" are very fragile. Please exercise great care in handling.

The Theater-Themed Peep Show consists of six hand-colored etchings with cutouts, representing various "layers" of a theater scene. When assembled on the included acrylic stands and viewed at eye level, a three-dimensional perspective of the scene is created.
