John Van Buren (1810-1866) was an American attorney and politician, and the son of Martin Van Buren, 8th President of the United States. He graduated from Yale, practiced law in Albany and in New York City, and served as New York State Attorney General from 1845 to 1847. He was also active in Democratic Party politics.
Enos T. Throop (1784-1874) was an American lawyer, politician and diplomat. He served as governor of New York State from 1829 to 1832.
The John Van Buren Letter consists of a single document from Van Buren to Enos T. Throop, then governor of the state of New York. The letter offers Van Buren's opinions on questions of law "in relation to the election of Colonel of the 131 Regiment of Infantry." The Colonel in question is identified as Colonel Cowles, no first name given.
