The United States Christian Commission was created in 1861 by the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) for the purpose of bringing supplies and religious comfort to soldiers serving in the Civil War. The USCC delegates served as volunteers on the field, in the hospitals and on the battlefields. Little is known about Fletcher Ward apart from his service for the USCC as a delegate from Albany, New York.
The Fletcher Ward Papers consist of Correspondence (two letters), Miscellany (Ward's official commission papers from the USCC) and Writings, which are comprised of a diary, two essays, lists of the dead, and a composition notebook. The diary details his experiences with and reception from Union soldiers in the army camps and hospitals, while the composition book is filled with poetry and two love letters to Harriet Dorman (dated 1840).
