Biography
Jewel Courtney Mitchell (1956-1988) was among the 270 victims of the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland on December 21, 1988. Jewel was born in Georgetown, Guyana. He worked for the Guyana Ministry of Education and an insurance company before immigrating to the United States with his family in November 1981. He attended Pace University and received a bachelor's degree in accounting in 1986. Jewel joined the Army ROTC program at Pace and upon graduation, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the United States Army. Jewel was assigned to a post in Germany in 1987 and worked there until the time of his death. He had been returning home to see his family for the holidays.
His mother wrote that Jewel "was a very friendly and warm person."
Scope and Content Note
The Jewel Courtney Mitchell Family Papers contains photographs of Jewel, correspondence, family briefing materials, and a program for Jewel's home-going ceremony. The family briefing materials include a blank petition form to the United States President and Congress to investigate the bombing, an informational sheet on the returning of victims' property, and a factsheet on Scottish Courts.
