Founded in 1908 at Howard University, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. (AKA) is the oldest Greek letter society founded by African American college-educated women. The sorority incorporated in 1913, ensuring the sisterhood's perpetuity. It remains one of the largest Greek-letter organizations with over 360,000 initiates and chapters in 12 countries and territories. Although founded by African American women, AKA is inclusive in their membership and is not solely open to women of color. Syracuse University’s graduate chapter of the sisterhood, Iota Nu Omega, was established in 1972, followed by the undergraduate chapter, Iota Upsilon in 1974.
The Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. (Syracuse University Chapter) Collection consists of materials spanning from 1968 to 2008. In the collection are booklets from the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Heritage Series and event fliers for both the graduate and undergraduate chapters of the sorority.
Please note that the collection is housed off-site, and advance notice is required to allow time to have the materials brought to the Reading Room on campus.
