In 1924, Alpha Lambda Delta was originally founded by Maria Leonard at the University of Illinois to acknowledge high academic achievement of freshman women. On February 22, 1970, a chapter of Alpha Lambda Delta was initiated at Syracuse University, although it existed prior to 1970 under the name Sigma Lambda Delta. A similar society, Phi Eta Sigma, was founded in 1923 for a similar purpose but for men. These organizations continued to be single sex until the 1970s, when both allowed the opposite sex to become members. Both organizations serve first year students with high academic standing and there is currently a chapter of Phi Eta Sigma but not Alpha Lambda Delta at Syracuse University.
The Alpha Lambda Delta (Syracuse University Chapter) Collection contains materials from 1960 to 1975 that describe its history, members and ceremonies. The collection also contains materials related to Sigma Lambda Delta, the predecessor of Alpha Lambda Delta at Syracuse University. Included in the collection are a banner and instructions used for initiation as well as membership and pledge cards. Also in the collection are records from the chapter president, secretary, and advisor that contain correspondence, meeting minutes and other materials that describe the organization's functions at Syracuse University.
Please note that the collection is housed off-site, and advance notice is required to allow time to have the materials brought to the Reading Room on campus.
Student records, including microfilm records of student transcripts, grades and other files, are restricted to the office of origin for 80 years from date of graduation.
