Mildred Cleaveland Barthold (1898-1986) graduated from Syracuse University's College of Liberal Arts in 1921.
She was active on campus as a member of several organizations, including the Pennsylvania Club, the French Club, the Y.W.C.A., the Women's League and the Consumer's League. She was also a sister of Alpha Xi Delta sorority and lived in Parker Cottage prior to moving to the sorority house at 760 Comstock Avenue. Many of Barthold's photographs feature her friends and sorority sisters, "The Parkerites," enjoying their time on and around campus.
Upon graduation, Barthold received a provisional teaching certificate, and taught in New York state for a few years before returning to her hometown of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania to teach English, French and history at her alma mater, Bethlehem High School. She married Allen Jennings Barthold in 1927, and the couple moved to New Haven, Connecticut where Allen was studying for a PhD in French at Yale. They returned to Bethlehem in 1939 with their young son, Gregory, where Allen became head of the Department of Romance Languages at Lehigh University. Mildred became a member of the American Association of University Women, and, as an amateur genealogist, was proud of her membership in both the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Mayflower Society.
The Mildred Cleaveland Barthold Collection consists of photographs of Barthold, her classmates, sorority sisters of Alpha Xi Delta, and friends during their time at Syracuse University in the early 1920s. Included are views of the campus and the surrounding area, and several photographs of the residents of Parker Cottage, "The Parkerites" as Barthold called them, in costume for a range of student activities. Also included is a biography of Mildred Cleaveland Barthold written by her granddaughter, Elizabeth Barthold O'Brien, in 2007.
