William H. Berwald (1864-1948) was a composer, conductor, pianist, and professor at Syracuse University's College of Fine Arts. Berwald was born in Mecklenburg, Germany, in the Province of Schwerin. As a young man he was a student at the Conservatory of Music in Stuttgart and the Royal Academy of Music in Munich.
In 1892 Berwald began teaching as a professor of composition and piano at Syracuse University, where he would stay for 52 years. He taught the history of music, music theory, and the piano. Berwald earned a master’s degree and doctoral degree in music from Syracuse University in 1903 and 1912 respectively.
While working at the University he was a prolific composer, producing over 400 works of orchestral and chamber music. Berwald directed a Symphony Orchestra at Syracuse University from 1922 to 1925, with concerts held at the Keith Theater located at 400 Salina Street. He was widely recognized in his field and received many prestigious awards including the prize of the Manuscript Music Society of Philadelphia (1901), the Clemson Gold Medal in New York (1913), the Presser Etude Prize (1915), and the Estey Organ Prize (1928).
The William H. Berwald Papers contain scores, sound recordings, two scrapbooks, biographical materials, and printed materials. The first scrapbook belonged to William Berwald; the second belonged to pianist and pupil of Berwald, Sherman Schoonmaker.
