Herman C. Beyle (1892-1956) was a professor of political science at Syracuse University. He was well known for his ability as a public opinion surveyor and political science measurement researcher.
Beyle was born in Borden, Indiana and received his bachelor's degree from Central College in Iowa in 1912. Beyle then went on to receive his master's degree at the University of Chicago in 1916. He was drafted into the United States Army at the onset of World War I and served as a second lieutenant in the 6th Field Battalion Signal Corps, though he never ended up going overseas. At the end of the war, Beyle returned to the University of Chicago and was awarded his PhD in 1926. He taught at Fargo College, Oberlin College, DePauw University, the University of Chicago, and the University of Minnesota before coming to teach at Syracuse University in 1928. Beyle also did contract work for the New York State Board of Regents and the Federal Housing Administration while working at Syracuse University. He wrote extensively on the use of propaganda, public opinion, and using measurement in political science. Beyle was a professor at Syracuse University for 28 years.
The Herman C. Beyle Papers contains writings composed by Beyle during his time as a professor at Syracuse University. There are articles from political science journals, a report from the City of Syracuse he contributed to, a book on governance, and a manuscript for "An Introduction to Measurement in Political Science," which was considered for publication by Syracuse University Press but not actually published. There are edits and annotations in the manuscript made by his sons, Thad and Noel Beyle, who were also political scientists.
