The Syracuse University Bookstore has existed in some form since the establishment of the University's first official campus store in the Hall of Languages in 1886. This iteration of the bookstore closed in 1900, and another would not open until 1910. The new generation of the campus bookstore was originally located in the basement of the Administration Building but moved to 303 University Place in 1912. In 1962, Syracuse University purchased the Corner Bookstore, an independently-owned store that had operated on campus since 1908. The Corner Bookstore operated until 1969, when it was demolished to make way for the Newhouse Communications Center. In 1976, the main bookstore moved to the Joe and Emily Lowe Art Center, where it would remain after the building was enclosed as part of the Schine Student Center in 1985. Throughout its history, the Syracuse University Bookstore also operated a number of branch stores, including locations in Graham Hall (later the Graham Dining Center), Reid Hall, the Skybarn on South Campus, Lawrinson Hall, and the Brewster/Boland/Brockaway Complex. It also operated full-service stores at the State University of New York Health Science Center and Utica College. In the fall of 2024, Syracuse University announced that the bookstore's management would be taken over by Barnes & Noble College. As of 2025, the Syracuse Campus Store operates two branches in addition to its main location in the Schine Student Center: The Slocum Art & Supply Store in Slocum Hall and the Orange Shop at the JMA Wireless Dome.
The Syracuse University Bookstore Records contains brochures, catalogs, clippings, correspondence, forms, fliers, promotional materials, newsletters, scrapbooks and media concerning the operation of the Syracuse University Bookstore. These materials include information on promotions and programs undertaken by the store. The collection also contains materials relating to the 1978 student boycott of the bookstore organized by the Student Association in response to high textbook prices, low textbook buyback rates, and false shoplifting accusations against students, among other cited causes.
