Syracuse University alumna and philanthropist Joan Breier Brodsky (b. 1945) earned a bachelor’s degree from the School of Education in 1967 and a master’s degree from the School of Library Science in 1968. Many of her philanthropic endeavors are inspired by her academic interests in library science and the traditional arts of book production. She and her husband William Brodsky '65, G'68, H'24 have funded a variety of initiatives at Syracuse University over the years including the Helen and Irwin Brodsky Scholarship in the College of Law and the Brodsky-Breier Digital Learning Center at the School of Information Studies (iSchool). The Brodskys also funded the Brodsky Endowment for the Advancement of Library Conservation at Syracuse University Libraries, a series that began in 2005 to advance the knowledge of library conservation theory, practice, and application. Joan Brodsky also serves on the Libraries Advisory Board and previously served on the iSchool Advisory Board. She received honorary doctor of humane letters from Syracuse University in 2024.
The Joan Breier Brodsky Papers contain Syracuse University School of Library Science graduate course materials including syllabi, readings lists, and bibliographies.
