Dr. John Jackson Brown (1820-1891) was a Syracuse University professor of physics and chemistry from the earliest days of the University in 1871 to 1889. He was an alumnus of Genesee College (A.M., 1860) and held honorary degrees from Syracuse University (A.M., 1874) and McKendree College (LL.D., 1879). Before joining Syracuse University, Brown was a professor at Cornell University. He was made a professor emeritus at Syracuse University upon retiring
The J. J. Brown Papers comprise a roll book tracking student attendance for several years of his physics and chemistry classes at Syracuse University, as well as correspondence. One letter in the collection dates after Brown's death because the sender did not realize Brown had died a few years before.
