Laura Davis (later Davidson) was a student at Syracuse University from 1913 to 1917. During her time at Syracuse University, she was active in a variety of student organizations, serving on the Class Executive Committee, as the secretary of the Sociology Club, and as vice-president of the Pennsylvania Club. Davis was a member of the Sigma Kappa sorority and was active in the Women's League, the Young Women's Christian Association, the Women's Athletic Association, and the Equal Suffrage League. She also sang in Syracuse University's Glee Club and the University Chorus. Davis graduated with her bachelor of arts degree in sociology in 1917 and took a position with the Union Settlement Association in New York City.
This collection contains materials that users may find objectionable due to racist language. The language contained in this collection was conventional at the time of its creation, although no less harmful and inaccurate than it is today. The collection is preserved and presented for its historic and research value.
The Laura Davis Papers contain letters written by Davis to her family during her time as a student at Syracuse University, Davis' student gym uniform, and typescripts of a narrative recollection of Davis’ college career. Both the letters and typescripts contain details of daily life as a female student at Syracuse University in the early 20th century, including traditions, sorority culture, athletics, student life, academics, and Davis’ participation in the Equal Suffrage League.
Please note that the collection is housed off-site, and advance notice is required to allow time to have the materials brought to the Reading Room on campus.
