Biography
Jaime Ferrán (1928-2016) was a Spanish poet, memoirist, translator, scholar and professor at Syracuse University. Born in Cereva, in Catalonia, Spain, he studied law at the University of Barcelona and received his Ph.D. from the University of Madrid. While a student, Ferrán began publishing his poetry and became an influential member of the "Generation of '50" Spanish literary and intellectual movement. Ferrán first came to the United States in 1960 as a Fulbright Visiting Professor at Colgate University. In 1963, he accepted a position with the Department of Romance Languages (now the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics) at Syracuse University where he remained as a professor until his retirement in 1995. During his time at Syracuse University, Ferrán served as the director of the Centro de Estudios Hispánicos and as the director of Syracuse University's study abroad programs in Spain and Colombia. Over the course of his life, Ferrán published a total of 44 books in numerous genres, including books of poetry in Spanish, memoirs in Catalan, children's books, literary anthologies, scholarly monographs and edited volumes, and translations of novels and poetry, including the work of William Butler Yeats and Ezra Pound. He was also a contributor to and editor of the literary magazine Laye. Ferrán received a number of awards for his writing and teaching, including the City of Barcelona Prize in 1953, the Lope de Vega Prize in 1962, the Premio Lazarillo for children's literature in 1968, the Indibil Prize in 1971, and the Gaziel Prize for Biographies and Memoirs in 2001.

The Jaime Ferrán Papers consists of typewritten and handwritten poetry manuscripts, sheet music, programs, and other printed materials. The majority of these materials are in Spanish.
