The Syracuse University Graduate Student Organization (GSO) was established at Syracuse University in 1968. It is comprised of graduate student representatives, some of whom serve as representatives in the larger University Senate. Within the GSO are multiple committees including: Academic Resources and Affairs, Families, Diversity, Finance, Graduate Employment Issues, Grants, Civic Engagement, Outreach, and Student Life. Taskforces are also formed within the GSO occasionally, one such example is the Sesquicentennial Taskforce formed in August of 2019. The GSO, with the undergraduate Student Association, fund the Student Legal Services program which offers free legal counsel to students. Additionally, the GSO offers funding for special programming and events as well as travel and research grant funding. The GSO also partners with career services, the early education and childcare center, the Bernice M. Wright nursery school, the future professoriate program, and the Slutzker Center for International Services. The GSO is committed to maintaining Syracuse University as a first-rate institution for graduate education in all aspects of graduate student life.
The Graduate Student Organization (GSO) Records includes series for: Budget, Clippings, Correspondence, Legal materials, Meetings and minutes, Printed materials, Questionnaires and surveys, and Subject files. The Budget series contains budget requests from various clubs and organizations on campus. The Clippings series is comprised of general information about the GSO, the majority of the clippings being about Syracuse University's investments in companies associated with the South African apartheid and student reactions. The Correspondence series includes correspondence to and from GSO officials including the president, vice-president, and comptroller as well as various boards within the GSO. The Legal materials series contains information about the graduate legal infirmary, legal services provided by the GSO, and documents regarding a lawsuit between the GSO and one of its members. The Meetings and minutes series contains information about and minutes of senate and general GSO meetings, the University Union, and various boards and committees. The Printed materials series is made up of constitutions, by-laws, handbooks, and manuals of the GSO as well as printed materials about graduate student life. The Questionnaire and surveys series holds surveys sent to domestic and international graduate students on behalf of the GSO. The Subject files series houses various materials about the GSO and the graduate student community on campus such as recordings of conferences, information about graduate student stipends, reports from the GSO, and information on the many committees within the GSO.
Please note that the collection is housed off-site, and advance notice is required to allow time to have the materials brought to the Reading Room on campus.
