The Humanities Program began at Syracuse University in 1948 and was introduced to offer a more interdisciplinary study. Although the main part of the program emphasized literature, philosophy, theology, history, musicology and art history, the degree could be customized to include disciplines from a wide range of areas like mathematics or sensory communications. With the option to customize the degree, it was originally designed for students who would go on to be scholars, teachers and professors. By 1997, the Humanities Program was phased out and no longer accepted new students. In its place, students could earn their doctorate in a particular subject with the ability to take classes in other departments. Today, the Humanities Center, which was founded in 2008, serves students and the University community in efforts to support the humanities.
The Syracuse University Humanities Program Records contain reports and other publications relating to its functions as part of the College of Arts and Sciences from 1967 until 1997. Included in this collection are annual reports, bulletins and other publications from the program.
Please note that the collection is housed off-site, and advance notice is required to allow time to have the materials brought to the Reading Room on campus.
