Biography

Margaret Lay-Dopyera (b. 1931) is a professor emerita at Syracuse University who taught early childhood education at the School of Education from 1967 to 1992. From 1970 to 1974, she was the director of the Syracuse University Early Childhood Education Center (SUECEC), a daycare center where she developed the program called the Responsive Care Model. She also served as associate dean for academic programs from 1983 until her retirement in 1992.

While at the University, Lay-Dopyera conducted research on early childhood education and produced a number of writings on her findings. One of her major publications was Becoming a Teacher of Young Children which she co-wrote in 1977 with her future husband John E. Dopyera. This book was republished in multiple subsequent editions from 1982 to 1993.
