Biography
William C. Lehmann (1888-1980) was a professor of sociology at Syracuse University from 1927 to 1954 and was an active member of the Syracuse community.
Lehmann was born in 1888 in Slater, Iowa. He earned his Bachelor of Arts from Lakeland College in 1910, which was then called Mission House College. In 1913 he was ordained to the ministry, and one year later he married his wife. Lehmann then attended Vanderbilt University, earning his Bachelor of Divinity in 1917 and his Master of Arts in 1919. After graduation, Lehmann taught for four years at Mission House College and was also a visiting professor at Wells College.
In 1927 Lehmann began teaching social theory and urban sociology at Syracuse University in the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs. On various occasions he served as Acting Chairman of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology.
While at Syracuse University, Lehmann was an active member of the local community. Notably, Lehmann acted as a population consultant to the City Planning Commission and to the Syracuse Housing Authority, contributing to the Adams Street Housing Project. At various times he served as Director of the Americanization League, Chairman of the Community Chest Drive, Vice President of the New York State Americans for Democratic Action, as well as a member of the Syracuse Citizen’s Committee of the New York State Anti-Discrimination Commission.
During this time, Lehmann was also a visiting professor at Tulane University and in 1930 earned his PhD from Columbia University. In 1950, he began traveling abroad to study the moralists of the Scottish Enlightenment. Two years later he was sent by the U.S. Department of the State on a special education assignment at the Amerika Institute in the University of Munich. After the assignment, Lehmann remained in Munich as the acting director and visiting professor at the Institute.
In 1954 Lehmann retired from Syracuse University and was awarded a Whitney Visiting Professorship that stationed him at Centre College of Kentucky in Danville. Lehmann later held visiting professorships at the University of Muenster in Germany and at the University of Hartford. He also became one of the leading authorities on the eighteenth-century Scottish Enlightenment.

The William C. Lehmann Papers includes four series:
The Correspondence series includes general correspondence between friends and colleagues between 1938 and 1952.
Project Material consists of reports, maps, tables, and graphs that were specifically used in Lehmann's projects. These materials appear complete.
The Research Data series also contains reports, maps, tables, and graphs. Material in this series could not be linked to specific projects and represents a broad range of data collected by Lehmann.
Student Work includes research reports and assignments written by students between 1927 and 1954.
