Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of one scrapbook compiled by Howard Dixon Mitchell. The materials inside are dated from 1883 to 1896. The scrapbook is a rich resource on the history of student life at Syracuse University in late nineteenth century. A variety of formats fill the book: photographs, letters, yearbook pages, newspaper clippings, poems, short essays and musings, cartoons, sketches of Chancellor Alexander Winchell and professors, event tickets, programs, advertisements, class schedules, class work, and tuition payment records. A few sketches are by Newton A. Wells, a professor of drawing at Syracuse, including one that documents the laying of the cornerstone for Crouse College in 1888. Photographs in the scrapbook capture old student traditions, including the Calculus Burial and the Cane Rush. There are also images of campus buildings, students at their boarding house (the first dormitory was not built on campus until 1900), and the surrounding area, including Onondaga Lake, the Erie Canal, and the city of Syracuse.
