Willard Mullin (1902-1978) was an American cartoonist. Born on September 14, 1902 in Columbus, Ohio, he grew up and attended school in Los Angeles, California. In 1923, he began working for the Los Angeles Herald doing photograph retouching. Mullin learned a wide array of artistic skills while at the Herald and worked his way up to cartoonist. He moved to New York in 1934 and a year later found a job as a cartoonist with the New York World-Telegram, where he worked until its collapse in the 1960s. After leaving the World-Telegram, Mullin did work for LIFE magazine, TIME magazine, and the Saturday Evening Post, among others.
Mullin is most well-known for his sports cartoons. In 1937 he developed his most famous character, the Brooklyn Bum, after the Brooklyn Dodgers baseball team. He covered both professional and collegiate sports, lending his hand to the New York Rangers, the Harlem Globetrotters, the New York Mets, and a number of college football teams. In 1954, Mullin won the National Cartoonists Society's Reuben Award, its highest honor.
The Willard Mullin Cartoon Collection contains seven cartoons about Syracuse University football made by the artist between 1950 and 1960. The cartoons feature prominent members of the football community such as Ernie Davis and Ben Schwartzwalder and were made in anticipation of upcoming games.
