Maria Calabrese Murray (1923-2012) and William Ellsworth Murray (d. 1998) were Syracuse University alumni. Maria Murray attended Syracuse University for her undergraduate studies and received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in art education in 1944. She was a member of the sorority Sigma Kappa and the fine arts honorary society Sigma Chi Alpha. She was a varsity shooter and manager of the Syracuse University women's rifle team and chaired the Women's Athletic Association. Both Murrays served in the Navy during and immediately after World War II. They both attended Syracuse University for graduate school; Maria received a master's in applied arts and William received his medical degree.
The Maria Calabrese and William Ellsworth Murray Papers consist of programs, dance cards, records, and photographs related to the Murrays' time as students at Syracuse University and their military service. Most of these materials were collected by Maria Murray and were originally organized in scrapbooks she had kept.
The Memorabilia series comprises dance cards and souvenir programs from Greek societies and other organizations on campus. Most are from Sigma Kappa events.
Within the Papers series are correspondence, newspaper clippings, programs and tickets, photographs, and records related to the Murrays' time at Syracuse University and their World War II service. Many of Maria Murray's papers show the role of the military and the impact of World War II on college students during the war years, particularly as it affected the role of women.
Please note that the collection is housed off-site, and advance notice is required to allow time to have the materials brought to the Reading Room on campus.
Written permission must be obtained from the Syracuse University Archives and all relevant rights holders before publishing quotations, excerpts or images from any materials in this collection.
Football and basketball programs from 1941-1945 were removed and placed into the Syracuse University Men's Football Collection and Syracuse University Men's Basketball Collection, respectively.
