Biography
Margaret Deabler Muser (1896-1984) was a Syracuse University alumna as well as a member of the Syracuse-in-China program.
Muser was born on July 10, 1896 near Scranton, Pennsylvania. Muser entered the School of Speech at Syracuse University in 1915, hoping to become a performer. She left the University in 1917 to join the Red Cross nurses' reserve during World War I. She returned to Syracuse and moved to the School of Nursing, completing her certificate in 1922 after spending time at the House of the Good Shepherd Hospital. After completing her nurse's certificate, Muser was invited to join the Syracuse-in-China group as their nurse and secretary. She quickly agreed and found herself on a steamboat headed for Shanghai within a month. Muser would take many more trips to China.
The Syracuse-in-China program was established in 1921 as Christian missionary unity, and Muser was among one of the first groups to make the journey to China. The mission's approach was three-fold, blending education, medicine, and church activities. Muser was a part of the medical team from her first trip to around 1926.
In the 1960s, Muser spent her time at San Diego State University, meeting many students through international student groups and teaching some of them English. In 1969, she decided to move back to China to teach English at the Chinese Naval Academy.
Scope and Content Note
The Margaret Deabler Muser Papers contain photographs from her trips to China, excerpts from the diary that she kept on her first journey there, correspondence between herself and her loved ones, and clippings of her adventures.
