Biography
Michael Neary (1938-2017) was a student and football player at Syracuse University from 1956-1960. He was on the championship 1959 football team with Ernie Davis, led by Coach Ben Schwartzwalder. After graduating from Syracuse University, Neary was a science teacher for 32 years at Lindenhurst High School in Lindenhurst, New York.
Scope and Content Note
The Michael Neary Scrapbook spans from 1959 to 2008, but a majority of the memorabilia and photographs are from 2008 with only a few of the items being from the late 1950s. The focus of the scrapbook is on the celebration and premiere of the movie The Express: The Story of Ernie Davis, a dramatization of the life of Ernie Davis who was the first Black student athlete to win the Heisman Trophy. Both Neary and Davis were members of the historic 1959 team and Neary attended the premiere of the movie in Syracuse, New York. There are several programs, ticket stubs, parking passes, and photographs from the premiere on September 12, 2008 and from the tailgate that unveiled the Ernie Davis statue on September 13, 2008 which is on Syracuse University's campus. There are cards and programs from 1959 that Neary included from the special events he attended as a member of the football team that year. At the end of the scrapbook there are a few photographs from the late 1950s that are unidentified.
