The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) was founded in 1974 at Purdue University in order to improve the recruitment and retention of its black engineering students. Since then, there have been more than 500 chapters founded in the United States and abroad, with over 17,000 members. As stated by the NSBE, their mission is to “increase the number of culturally responsible Black Engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally and positively impact the community.”
The Syracuse University collegiate chapter hosts a number of programs, including the Pre-Collegiate Initiation Program, in which members tutor K-12 students in math and science, and door-to-door informational visits through A Walk for Education.
The collection comprises event programs, publications, clippings, and other materials related to the administration of the club for the Syracuse University chapter of the NSBE. There is also a scrapbook with photographs, which was disassembled and placed into folders during processing.
Please note that the collection is housed off-site, and advance notice is required to allow time to have the materials brought to the Reading Room on campus.
Written permission must be obtained from the Syracuse University Archives and all relevant rights holders before publishing quotations, excerpts or images from any materials in this collection.

The Archives has a limited amount of information about the acquisition. The materials were donated in 1999. Some materials were also provided by Sean Page and were included in the initial donation.
Materials were rehoused in archival folders and box. The scrapbook was photocopied to preserve documentation of the original page layout, then photos were removed and placed in archival protective sheets and folders.
