The Outer Fringe Society was created by Syracuse University students in 1972 with the goal of replacing campus trees killed by Dutch elm disease. It later expanded its focus to larger environmental and campus beautification concerns. In 1974, the Outer Fringe Society sponsored a "Pollution in Syracuse" photo contest, for which they received a number of original photographs, many of which are featured in the collection. In 1975, the club faced financial hardship and declining membership.
The collection comprises slides, photographs, and matted prints of activities completed or sponsored by the Outer Fringe Society, including the planting of trees and flowers around campus and the 1974 "Pollution in Syracuse" photo contest.
Please note that the collection is housed off-site, and advance notice is required to allow time to have the materials brought to the Reading Room on campus.
