Karl B. Squires (1882-1966) graduated from Syracuse University in 1906 with a degree in electrical engineering. While a student, Squires was very active in student life and was a member of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, the Engineering Association, the Electrical Engineering Association, the Long Island Club and the Senior Dinner Club. He was also involved in Greek life, and was a member of the Beta Theta Pi social fraternity, and the Tau Theta Upsilon engineering honors fraternity. Squires also captained Syracuse University's varsity track team and cross-country club. After graduating, Squires served in the National Guard and as an engineer in the Navy. Later in life, Squires became the county engineer and county surveyor for Manatee County, Florida. He ran his own engineering office and was an avid naturalist and amateur archaeologist.
The Karl B. Squires Glass Plate Negatives Collection contains glass plate negatives of photographs taken by Squires during his time as a student at Syracuse University as well as a limited number of prints from these negatives. Squires' photographs depict Syracuse University's campus as it appeared in the early 20th century, as well as student activities, traditions such as the Moving Up Day parade and Salt Rush, and Greek letter organizations, particularly Beta Theta Pi and Beta Epsilon.
Because the glass plate negatives are fragile, they are restricted. Please consult with an archivist to obtain permission to view the original negatives.
