Syracuse University was founded on March 24, 1870, when its Board of Trustees signed the University charter and certificate of incorporation, acting on a proposal put forth earlier that year at the Methodist State Convention. Despite its modest beginnings, the story of Syracuse University has been one of remarkable growth and progress. The University's population has expanded from a few dozen local students to over 21,000 students from all over the world. Significant eras of development in campus building and academic programs included the late nineteenth to early twentieth centuries and the post-World War II years. The second half of the twentieth century saw the University transform into a modern research institution with international connections.
The Syracuse University Stamp Collection contains stamps from around 1910 with full color artwork depicting Syracuse University themes such as the color orange and imagery such as the University seal and block "S." The stamps in this collection were not viable for use as postage stamps and so were likely produced as souvenirs or collector's items. One stamp was originally distributed in Fatima cigarette cartons as part of the company's College Flag Stamp Series and bears a print of a Syracuse University flag, the University seal, and a cheer: "S.U. Rah! Rah! S.U. Rah! Rah! S-Y-R-A-C-U-S-E." The other item in the collection is a sheet of stamps with athletes in Syracuse University uniforms, each playing a different sport. The sheet has depictions of crew, baseball, football, track, basketball, and tennis, and each stamp also has the University seal and "Syracuse" in block orange letters printed on it.
