The South Side Newspaper Project is an organization formed of a collaboration between Syracuse University's Newhouse School of Public Communications and the Southside Community Coalition. The Southside neighborhood has the highest poverty rate in Syracuse, which as a city has one of the highest rates of poverty in the United States. Poverty in Syracuse is highly concentrated and racialized, affecting Black people at significantly higher rates than other demographic groups besides Latinos. Southside borders Syracuse University's main campus, with Interstate 81 serving as the primary boundary between the two. Its proximity to the University makes it a common target for outreach initiatives.
Steve Davis, a professor at the University, initiated the conceptual stages of the South Side Newspaper Project in 2006 by instructing his students to create a newspaper featuring stories from Southside. The result was well received by residents of the neighborhood. Around the same time, the Southside Community Coalition began discussing the creation of a community newspaper. These ideas came together into The Stand, which published its first issue in March 2010. The Stand's mission is to be a voice for the community and inspire community conversations. Reporters for The Stand continue to include Syracuse University students.
The Stand South Side Newspaper Project Collection comprises three series.
Memorabilia contains a t-shirt and stickers branded with "The Stand South Side Newspaper Project."
The Other printed materials series contains fliers and a photobook related to events hosted by the South Side Newspaper Project. Additionally, it contains nearly a decade of the organization's annual reports.
The stand series contains a nearly complete run of The Stand. Issues 38 and 63 are not in the collection.
Please note that the collection is housed off-site, and advance notice is required to allow time to have the materials brought to the Reading Room on campus.
Written permission must be obtained from the Syracuse University Archives and all relevant rights holders before publishing quotations, excerpts or images from any materials in this collection.
Two issues of Vox/Voz, a similar collaboration between the Newhouse School and the local Syracuse community, were removed and added to the Newhouse School Records.
