Originally named the Office of Student Services, the Syracuse University Office of Student Affairs was the administrative body responsible for overseeing a variety of student services and activities from the mid-1960s to 2016. The position of Dean of Student Services was created in 1966. James G. Carleton was the first Dean of Student Services and worked along with the Dean of Men and the Dean of Women to oversee student activities and services on campus. In 1969, Carleton's title was renamed Dean of Student Affairs and in 1971, his department absorbed the offices of the Dean of Men and the Dean of Women to create one administrative body that was responsible for all student affairs. Over the years, the Office of Student Affairs created and operated the Office of Multicultural Affairs, LGBT Resource Center, Office of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs, Counseling Center, Substance Abuse Prevention and Health Advancement Office, and Living Learning Communities. Student Affairs was also responsible for monitoring student conduct, promoting student health, wellness, learning, and inclusion, and serving as an advocate for student interests in the upper levels of university administration. In 2016, the Offices of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management were merged to become the Division of Enrollment and Student Experience.
Frank Peter Piskor joined the staff of Syracuse University as a personnel counselor in 1939 and served as Dean of Men, Vice President for Academic Affairs, and Dean of Faculties at Syracuse University in the 1960s. He later went on to become president of St. Lawrence University from 1969 to 1981.
