Syracuse University was founded on March 24, 1870, when its Board of Trustees signed the University charter and certificate of incorporation, acting on a proposal put forth earlier that year at the Methodist State Convention. Despite its modest beginnings, the story of Syracuse University has been one of remarkable growth and progress. The University’s population has expanded from a few dozen local students to over 21,000 students from all over the world. Significant eras of development in campus building and academic programs included the late nineteenth to early twentieth centuries and the post-World War II years. The second half of the twentieth century saw the University transform into a modern research institution with international connections.
The Syracuse University Student Photograph Collection consists of photographs of alumni and non-graduates that were taken while they were students at the University. The majority of the photographs were taken from the 1940s to the early 1960s and consist primarily of black and white headshots of individual students. These photographs were possibly submitted to the University by students, either during the application process or when they were first year students.
Each student is identified by name and anticipated graduation year whenever possible. Researchers should note that married alumnae are named and listed in inconsistent ways, as some have their maiden name listed alongside their married name and others are referred to exclusively by their married name. Additional information such as Greek affiliation, addresses, and later occupations transcribed from the verso of photographs can be found for some individuals as well.
Please note that the collection is housed off-site, and advance notice is required to allow time to have the materials brought to the Reading Room on campus.
Written permission must be obtained from the Syracuse University Archives and all relevant rights holders before publishing quotations, excerpts or images from any materials in this collection.
Photographs of alumni that were taken after their time at the University and photographs of people who were not students were removed and placed with the Syracuse University Portrait Collection.
Images of Syracuse University students can also be found in the Syracuse University Portrait Collection, the Syracuse University Photograph Collection, and the Syracuse University yearbooks.
