Theta Chi Fraternity started as a local fraternity, Alpha Kappa Epsilon, which began at Syracuse University in 1921. In 1927, the brothers of Alpha Kappa Epsilon petitioned to Theta Chi Fraternity and was accepted in 1928 as the Alpha Chi Chapter of Theta Chi. Theta Chi had a tradition of having a dog at their house, usually a Saint Bernard.
