John Tyo (1917 - ) was a professor of film and supervisor of motion picture production at Syracuse University. Tyo was born in Calgary, Alberta, Canada and served in the Royal Canadian Air Force as an electronics technician during World War II. He became a United States citizen in 1955. Tyo attended the Cornish School of Fine Arts in Seattle, Washington, earned his bachelor's degree at the University of Washington, and completed his Ph.D. in education at Indiana University in 1961. Before joining the faculty of Syracuse University, Tyo taught at Pennsylvania State, the University of California, Indiana University, the University of Puerto Rico, and at several other institutions around the world. He was hired as the supervisor of motion picture production at Syracuse University in 1965, following his work with the RAND Corporation in California and the success of his award-winning educational and informational films, including Stars and Stripes on Display, How to Make a French Omelette, and The Legislative Process. Tyo's last project before beginning work at the University was an educational film commissioned by the government of Nigeria. Tyo retired from Syracuse University in 1983, at which time he was granted Emeritus status.
