Section 07900 Joint
Sealers
image 3: Joint sealant.
This elevation shows completed face brick and windows (except for the corner window units, which were field measured) ready for joint sealant or caulking as it is commonly called. The caulking contractor will install his own scaffold or hydraulic ladders to complete the work. The construction joints having an excess of through wall flashing, which can be seen sticking out of the joints, will be trimmed off by the caulking contractor prior to the installation of backer rod material in the joint. Final caulking with an elastomeric joint sealant is critical to the integrity of the exterior assembly structure. Poor workmanship here will produce water penetration, which may not show up until extensive damage has been done. The ASTM Standard for this type of sealant is ASTM C920 type M, grade MS, Class 25 which establishes the type, grade, class, and use of the joint sealant as well as the joint configuration.
