Erica Anderson Collection

A description of the collection at Syracuse University

Finding aid created by: MRC
Date: 8 Aug 2013

Biographical History

Erica Anderson was an American photographer and filmmaker. She was particularly interested in the work of physician and philanthropist Albert Schweitzer, making 19 trips to his hospital and clinic in Lamberene and shooting thousands of photographs in color and black and white. Anderson won an Oscar in 1958 for her documentary The Life and Times of Albert Schweitzer (her experience creating the film is documented in her book Albert Schweitzer's Gift of Friendship) and published several albums of photographs. She also founded the Albert Schweitzer Friendship House in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, where this collection was for many years housed and added to.

Anderson became close friends with librarian and Schweitzer scholar Antje Bultmann Lemke, whose father Rudolf Bultmann was a friend and admirer of Schweitzer's; it was through Lemke's efforts that Anderson's photographic legacy eventually came to Syracuse University.

Scope and Contents of the Collection

The Erica Anderson Collection consists of Anderson's own work -- thousands of photographs and several hundred reels of film, the majority of which concern Albert Schweitzer -- as well as film and video recordings of others' programs on Schweitzer. Other projects represented in the collection include Anderson's documentaries on painter Grandma Moses and sculptor Henry Moore.

The collection is largely unprocessed, but a general inventory of the films and a report produced in 1989 when the collection was still in the custody of the Albert Schweitzer Friendship House in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, are available in the Special Collections Research Center files.

Arrangement of the Collection

The collection is unprocessed and remains in original order.
