Ray Favata (1924-2018) was an American artist and illustrator.
Favata developed an interest in illustration during childhood. During World War II, he was drafted into the United States Army, and was stationed at Camp Lee. While there, he drew a comic strip for the camp's newspaper. In 1951, he received his first professional opportunity as an illustrator when he began working for Tempo Productions. He continued to work for Tempo and other production studios throughout the 1950s before establishing his own studios, Griffon Productions and Ray Favata Productions, in 1959. Much of his animation work from the 1950s through the 1970s focused on commercials and advertising, including projects for Charming Tissue, Tang, and Ocean Spray.
Later in his career, Favata created well-known characters including Sugar Bear and Granny Goodwitch for Post's Super Golden Crisp cereal, as well as Billy Jo Jive for Sesame Street. He also worked on animated television programs such as My Little Pony, The Great Space Coaster, and Charmkins. In the early 1990s, he worked on Doug, a popular animated television program.
Favata and his wife Carol had four children. He died October 19, 2018.
The Ray Favata Papers contains correspondence, artwork, photographs, and audiovisual recordings. The collection includes sketches and drawings of serveral of his well-known cartoon characters, including Doug and Sugar Bear.
