Biographical History

Michael Feingold (1945-2022) was an American dramaturg, translator, and theater critic, best known for his work at the Village Voice, where he wrote for more than forty years.

Feingold was born and raised in Chicago. He developed an interest in theater while in high school and went on to study English and comparative literature at Columbia College. He later attended the Yale School of Drama, initially intending to study playwriting. Under the influence of the newly-appointed dean (and theater critic) Robert Brustein he shifted his focus to dramatic criticism. During his time at Yale, Feingold served as the first editor of yale/theatre and was the first dramaturg of the Yale Repertory Theatre.

Feingold began his career at the Village Voice in 1971 and served as its chief theater critic from 1983 to 2013. As a dramaturg, he played a significant role in promoting the work of August Wilson and co-edited Ma Rainey's Black Bottom. As translator, he translated the works of Max Frisch, Gerhart Hauptmann, Bertolt Brecht, and Kurt Weill.
