Scope and Contents of the Collection

The 19th Century Newspapers Collection consists of scattered issues of more than 340 different newspapers. Most are from cities, towns, and villages in New York, though there are also some from Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Maryland, Virginia, and other states. The majority are from the 19th century, but there are some from the 1700s and 1900s.


Arrangement of the Collection

Issues are arranged alphabetically by publication title; within a given publication, issues are arranged chronologically.

Access Restrictions:

The majority of our archival and manuscript collections are housed offsite and require advance notice for retrieval. Researchers are encouraged to contact us in advance concerning the collection material they wish to access for their research.

Use Restrictions:

Written permission must be obtained from SCRC and all relevant rights holders before publishing quotations, excerpts or images from any materials in this collection.
