Biography

Photograph of Cynthia Smith

Cynthia “Cindy” Joan Smith (1967-1988) was among the 270 victims of the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland on December 21, 1988. She was a junior at Syracuse University’s College of Human Development studying fashion and design marketing. She was a member of the Delta Phi Epsilon sorority and participated in the Division of International Programs Abroad (DIPA), now SU Abroad, in London. A native of Milton, Massachusetts, Cindy was survived by her parents, Edward F. and Joan C. (Fahey) Smith; a brother, Edward F. Smith Jr., and a sister, Christine M. Smith (Velyvis).

While a student at Milton High School, Cindy was involved in youth programs including softball and basketball and Peer Leadership Counseling Program. She worked with other students to help them with problems such as drinking and drug use. Cindy loved helping people. Her outgoing personality allowed her to befriend many people and she loved life. Cindy was a co-moderator of “Youth in Focus,” her high school’s cable television program. On Saturdays, Cindy would take art classes at the New England School of Art. Her portfolio was judged exceptional during her interview for admission into Syracuse University. In grammar school she was in a program for academically talented children. She also played the violin.

Cindy's parents created the "Cynthia J. Smith Memorial Scholarship Fund" at Milton High School for student leaders.
