Historical Note

Syracuse University was founded on March 24, 1870, when its Board of Trustees signed the University charter and certificate of incorporation, acting on a proposal put forth earlier that year at the Methodist State Convention. Despite its modest beginnings, the story of Syracuse University has been one of remarkable growth and progress. The University's population has expanded from a few dozen local students to over 21,000 students from all over the world. Significant eras of development in campus building and academic programs included the late nineteenth to early twentieth centuries and the post-World War II years. The second half of the twentieth century saw the University transform into a modern research institution with international connections.

Syracuse University has maintained an expansive and active network of alumni since its formation. The University identifies over 240,000 active alumni in over 160 countries around the world.

Scope and Content Note

The Syracuse University Alumni Reference Collection is organized into six series.

The first series, Alumni events, contains materials documenting various events including banquets and special events and activities for alumni either on or off campus.

The next series, Alumni records, comprises materials such as directories, individual records, and general information about alumni of various classes.

The Alumni tours series consist of brochures from various alumni excursions around the world.

The Awards series contains lists as well as biographical and citation information for Arents Medal recipients. There are also programs from the awards dinners at which the medals were presented.

The second largest series, Publications, is predominantly made up of issues of the Alumni News magazine. The series also includes alumni newsletters and bulletins as well as class magazines and surveys.

The largest series, Reunions, contains invitations, programs, and other materials from various class reunions including milestone reunions and alumni weekends. The series also contains correspondence between members of several classes and their class secretaries regarding reunions and reunion attendance.
