Afterwards, he was accepted to Syracuse University, where he received his bachelor's degree in law in 1914. Admitted to the bar in the same year, he moved to Binghamton, New York to practice law and serve as an assistant district attorney of Broome County, New York from 1919 to 1921. He was a practicing attorney in the area for many years.
Anderson was elected as a member of the New York State Assembly in 1941 and 1942 and the New York State Senate from 1943 to 1952. In order to fill a temporary vacancy, he was appointed to the New York Supreme Court Sixth District on January 3, 1952. In November of the same year, he was officially elected to the position, which he kept until his retirement.
Anderson married Edna Madeline Mattice on November 26, 1914. Their son was New York State Senator Warren M. Anderson. Floyd E. Anderson died on February 17, 1976 in Binghamton, New York.
