The first building on campus, the Hall of Languages, housed the College of Liberal Arts in 1871. The first dean of the College of Liberal Arts was Dr. John Raymond French, who was a professor in mathematics. In 1971, the College of Liberal Arts was reorganized into the College of Arts and Sciences.
