Biography

Charles Newell Cobb (1855-1939) graduated from Syracuse University with a Bachelor of Arts in 1877 and a Master of Arts in 1880. He was an active member of the Phi Beta Kappa Fraternity. In 1875 he was elected one of the first four members of the "University nine," the first baseball team to represent Syracuse University.

After graduation, Cobb went to Europe and was commissioned as a war correspondent for five Central New York newspapers covering the Russo-Turkish war. After the war ended, he returned to the United States and in 1893 became supervisor of science instruction in the New York State Department of Education, a position he retained until his retirement in 1927.

Scope and Content Note

The Charles N. Cobb Papers date from 1874 to 1880 and consist of two scrapbooks detailing his time as a Syracuse University student, his diplomas, and a notebook containing his class notes on Ancient, Medieval, and Modern European History. One of the diplomas is decorated with pink and blue ribbons, documenting Syracuse University’s official colors at that time. The scrapbooks contain clippings from The Syracuse Journal and the Syracuse Daily Courier, envelopes and invitations, programs, activity tickets, and materials related to Phi Beta Kappa.
