Dr. Frances Shullanberger Dressler (1931-2023) was an alumna of Syracuse University. Originally from Hanford, California, she received her Bachelor of Arts degree in social science from Fresno State College before coming to Syracuse University to participate in the Student Dean Program in 1953. The Student Dean Program was a graduate assistantship in which women Master of Education candidates worked in the Office of the Dean of Women and served as resident advisors in University housing. At the time of Dressler's attendance, the program was administered by Dean Martha Eunice Hilton, the first woman to receive her Ph.D. in education from Syracuse University. The Student Dean Program provided practical experience in student personnel administration and was the first of its kind to include residential work.
Dressler graduated from the Student Dean Program with her Master of Education degree in 1955. Following graduation, she served as the Assistant Dean of Students at the State University Teacher's College at Potsdam, New York. Dressler later worked as a family counselor and as a professor of psychology and sociology at De Anza College. In 1981, she received her Ph.D. from the United States International University at San Diego.
The Frances Shullanberger Dressler scrapbook contains photographs and other items from Dressler's time as a student and alumna of Syracuse University's Student Dean Program. These photographs document graduate student social and academic life in the program, including images from parties, picnics, and other events, as well as photographs of University traditions, such as the Colgate Weekend poster competition and commencement. The scrapbook also documents a cross-country road trip taken by Dressler shortly after her graduation from Syracuse University, her time as Assistant Dean of Students at the State University Teacher's College at Potsdam, New York, and formal and informal reunions of Student Deans. In addition to the photographs, the scrapbook also contains a song sheet from the 1991 Student Dean reunion and ribbons from the Phi Kappa Phi honorary society.
