Eva Mae Bonham Gavitt (1914-2000) was the first woman to graduate from the College of Applied Science (now called the College of Engineering and Computer Science) at Syracuse University in 1935.
Eva Mae Bonham grew up in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania. She started at Syracuse University in 1931 and studied industrial engineering as an Applied Science major. During her time as a student she was a member of the Alpha Delta Phi Sorority, American Society of Civil Engineers, Pan-Hellenic Council, Women’s Christian Association, Honor Committee, Women’s Student Senate, and Math Club.
After her graduation in 1935, Eva Mae Bonham worked at Manhattan Rubber Company in Passaic, New Jersey. She married William B. Gavitt in 1937 and had two children.
Eva Mae Bonham Gavitt died in 2000 in Waxahachie, Texas.
The Eva Mae Bonham Collection contains a chemistry and physics handbook with her name in it, a name tag, presumably from a reunion, with her photograph on it, and a pamphlet from her memorial service.
